The National Youth Sports Program provides over 75,000 children annually the right start. The five-week program conducted at 200 colleges and universities last year makes an unprecedented effort to combine the promotion of athletic know-how and life skills that can bring participants closer to equality. NYSP believes all children deserve equal opportunities at the friendships and experiences of youthful summers. NYSP uses its resources to give children of low-income families positive memories and useful skills by requiring 90 percent of participants at each site to meet U.S. poverty guidelines. With this goal in mind, college and university personnel work to identify economically disadvantaged children who could most benefit from the safe haven and educational benefits of NYSP. It is no surprise that participation in athletics can enhance a student's interest in learning. NYSP employs this concept by offering mandatory swimming participation and instruction in at least two ot her sports. Basketball, touch or flag football, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field or volleyball instruction gives participants quality fundamental instruction and better understanding of game rules.  http://www.nyscorp.org/nysp_overview.htm
