Day Three: Show Jumping

The final test is show-jumping, to demonstrate that after a severe test of endurance, the horse can continue to perform with suppleness, energy and obedience. The course usually has 12-15 jumps including at least one combination, two oxers and, in some cases, a ditch or water jump. The horse must be supple to make the tight turns and obedient to lengthen or shorten the stride. Unlike the solid fences on the cross-country course, these fences will fall if rattled, and the course must be ridden in time to avoid penalty.

Each test in the Three-Day Event is scored individually, and totalled, so that the horse and rider with the lowest penalty score is the winner.
